Short Term Insurance Plans

What is it?

A Short Term health insurance plan is something to consider if you have a gap in coverage. It doesn’t come with all the bells and whistles of an employer or ACA plan, but it does cover some of the basic health insurance needs you may have – hospital treatment, doctor visits, specialist visits, ER, x-rays, lab work.

Although it shouldn’t be considered a substitute for long term health insurance, Short Term is coverage to get you by for 30-360 days (duration varies by state). It’s designed to be affordable, too.

VIEW PLANS

Consider Short Term health insurance if you are:

  • Between jobs
  • A college student or just out of school
  • Fresh off your parents’ insurance
  • Young and healthy, but want some insurance (just in case)
  • Missed Open Enrollment

The good: Why Short Term health insurance could be perfect for you.
  • In many cases, you can keep your own doctor
  • Applying is simple and you can apply anytime you want
  • Apply today and coverage could begin as soon as tomorrow in many cases
  • You get to choose how much or how little coverage you want based on your price range
  • In many cases, your whole family can get coverage, too
The not-so-good: Why it may not be right for you.
  • Plans are medically underwritten, and you have to answer medical questions to apply
  • Preexisting conditions are not covered
  • Prescription coverage depends on your plan
  • Short term plans are not ACA compliant, and therefore, they aren’t required to cover the 10 essential health plan benefits that ACA plans cover
  • Generally, maternity services aren’t covered
  • Most mental health services aren’t covered
  • Preventive care coverage is limited
  • In many states, the maximum duration for Short Term plans is just under a full 12 months

In select states, you can apply for TriTerm Medical insurance plans. These health insurance plans have a duration of almost 3 years over 3 terms (in South Carolina, three 11-month terms; in IN and OK, plans are three 364-day terms). Depending on the plan you choose, you can opt for various levels of coverage for preventive care, prescriptions, doctor office visits and more.

Short-term health insurance is medically underwritten and does not cover preexisting conditions. This coverage is not required to comply with certain federal market requirements for health insurance, principally those contained in the Affordable Care Act. Be sure to check your policy/certificate carefully to make sure you are aware of any exclusions or limitations regarding coverage of preexisting conditions or health benefits (such as hospitalization, emergency service, maternity care, preventive care, prescription drugs, and mental health and substance use disorder services). Your policy/certificate might also have lifetime and/or annual dollar limits on health benefits. If this coverage expires or you lose eligibility for this coverage, you might have to wait until open enrollment period to get other health insurance coverage. This is not Minimal Essential Coverage as defined in the Affordable Care Act and may not cover all Essential Health Benefits in your state. Some Short Term Plans available as association group insurance only to members of FACT, an independent association. Additional membership fees may apply.

FIXED INDEMNITY INSURANCE, ACCIDENT INSURANCE, AND CRITICAL ILLNESS INSURANCE PRODUCTS PROVIDE LIMITED BENEFITS. THESE ARE SUPPLEMENTS TO HEALTH INSURANCE AND ARE NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR THE MINIMUM ESSENTIAL COVERAGE REQUIRED BY THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT (ACA). LACK OF MAJOR MEDICAL COVERAGE (OR OTHER MINIMUM ESSENTIAL COVERAGE) MAY RESULT IN AN ADDITIONAL PAYMENT WITH YOUR TAXES. These products provide benefits in a stated amount regardless of the actual expenses incurred.
